Folic acid plays an important role in the formation of DNA and RNA, which is why it is especially important during pregnancy. It is now widely recognised that folate deficiency during pregnancy increases the risk of neural tube defects in the developing baby. Folic acid is known to help regulate homocysteine levels in the body, an amino acid that may be involved in damage to the lining of blood vessel walls.

Folic acid is a water-soluble vitamin that the body cannot store for long. Good food sources include green vegetables and cereals. However, cooking and storage can reduce its content in food. 47% of women do not consume the recommended 200 µg/day, so supplementation is recommended. Studies show folic acid supplements are well absorbed and are a reliable way to protect against dietary deficiencies.

This product provides 400 µg of folic acid, which is up to 3 times higher than what can be obtained from the diet.

Caution

High intake of folic acid may mask the signs and symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency (pernicious anaemia).

Store in a cool, dry place away from light.
