Jack Gladney, a university professor and chair of the Department of Hitler Studies, leads a quiet life in a small town called Blacksmith, together with his wife Babette and the four children from their previous marriages. Everything seems to run smoothly between college work and family, surrounded by American abundance and television consumption, until a toxic event occurs in the area and they are forced to evacuate along with others. While Jack suffered alone from the fears and doubts created after the toxic event, he suddenly discovers that Babette had secretly undergone a scientific psychopharmaceutical experiment, which had forced her to make other bitter compromises. From that moment, their lives are no longer the same.
