Within just 7 days and 7 nights, Petro Marko unfolds all the events of this novel.
After the capitulation of fascist Italy, soldiers and all Italians still remaining in Albania gathered at the port of Durrës, waiting for ships to return to their homeland. During this stay in the "last city" by the sea, page after page, many stories and destinies of people who have just survived the tragedy of the time begin to surface.
Through the memories of the characters, the action moves to other cities and villages of Albania, to Italy and elsewhere. They recount the decisive moments of their lives, the twists and surprises, with the desire to emerge from all this dramatic fog left behind by the war.
An important place in the novel, with a meaningful message, is also occupied by the love that arises between a young Albanian officer and an Italian girl who carries the weight of spiritual and moral violence. It is a love that defies borders, overcomes prejudice, and becomes tangible and human.
"The Last City" is a novel about war, peace and humanism. It is a precursor of the modern Albanian novel.
