A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

Besides being a portrait of Stephen Dedalus's childhood and youth, his search for identity through art, and his gradual departure from the demands of family, religion and Ireland itself, this novel is also a self-portrait of the young James Joyce and a universal testament to the artist's «imagination of eternity». As a mirror of Joyce's life and childhood, and an unmatched work of modernist literature, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is a novel about sexual awakening, rebellion against religion, and the essential search for the inner voice that every young artist must find in order to fully flourish.
