Onomastics and ethnolinguistics

Onomastics has always been the cornerstone and primary raw material in all historical-linguistic research and studies concerning the Illyrian-Albanians; first for foreign Albanologists, then (in their investigations, of ever broader scope) also for Albanian scholars.

In the new generation of Albanian linguists, the "collecting department" of toponymy and anthroponymy of Albanian lands will especially be revived, and on that material other research ventures with interest and new contributions will be laid out and carried out. As we know, for a long time and with significant contributions, the great masters of Albanian language history, the late Prof. Eqrem Çabej, who led all our studies in Tirana, carrying out a critical review of what had been said (sometimes well-founded, sometimes not) by foreign researchers, and who for the first time applied among us a working method combining views from many sides to support and arrive at accurate, or at least most acceptable, etymologies of Albanian toponyms; and Prof. Idriz Ajeti in Pristina, who also laid a cornerstone in the building of objective studies of Albanian onomastics.
