The tragedy Medea takes its title from its protagonist, a woman from the eastern shores of the Black Sea, who moves to ancient Greek Corinth, seduced by Jason, with whom she fell in love. But Jason abandons her for the daughter of another woman. The ruler of Corinth banishes Medea from the city and she is left a vagabond, at the crossroads of four roads, with no hope for life. To restore her honour, she causes four deaths: she kills Jason's new bride and her father, as well as the two sons she has with Jason.
Although it was written and staged in the city where democracy was born and flourished, Medea was difficult to accept in fifth-century BC Athens. But in today's societies, do we need the message of Medea, since women's rights to equality cannot be ignored indefinitely?
