It is 1989, and Herri "Lepur" Engstrëm has found everything except rest. He is gripped by the fear of death and, in the last year of the Reagan era, he has reason to be afraid. His fifty-five-year-old body is bloated from beer and gripped by chest pains. He suspects that his son Nelson, who has taken over the family business, is stealing the agency's money because of cocaine.
In fact, from Lepur's point of view, ruin is engulfing the whole world. The budget deficit is destroying America, his accountant is dying of AIDS, and a terrorist bombing has just blown up a plane over Lockerbie, Scotland. In terrible depression and obesity, he is being driven by his libido for the last time. His misguided sense of responsibility, his crude sexual desires and his racist views may make Lepur seem less than likable. Yet something entirely heroic remains in his character.
