Only twenty-six years old, the main character of this novel, Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, is a man-child caught in a struggle between instinct and thought, self and society, sexual pleasure and family duty. Fear of getting lost in the routine of conventional social and religious life makes him run and escape from one dead-end situation to another.
– If you have the courage to be yourself, others pay the price. – says Rabbit.
"Rabbit, Run" is the first novel of the Rabbit tetralogy, which established John Updike's place as one of the most important American authors. The author was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for the two following novels, "Rabbit Is Rich" and "Rabbit at Rest". Together with the novel "Rabbit Redux", this unique tetralogy tells the story from youth to death of the former basketball star Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, who belongs to the middle class of American society. The events begin in the fictional town of Brewer, Pennsylvania, when Rabbit instinctively, without any predetermined plan, abandons his pregnant wife and son.
