Born in Porbandar, a small town in western India, he was a man of elegant appearance who dressed very simply, wrapped only in a white cloth. Later everyone would call him Mahatma (Great Soul), because Gandhi devoted his whole life to the ideal of persuading and showing people that violence is the worst way to fight for equality between occupiers and the oppressed, between the rich and the poor. Living a simple and exemplary life, serving as the best model for others and turning the word into his best weapon, he contributed not only to improving the condition of less privileged or discriminated people, but also played a decisive role in achieving India's independence. Unfortunately, paradoxically, one of the world's greatest pacifists was killed by a religious fanatic.
