Melsi, an Albanian journalist and writer who has lived in Greece for twenty years, hurries back to his homeland after learning of the enigmatic death of his father in Shanghai. For twenty-five days he faces the exhausting bureaucracy of the Albanian state in order to bring his father's lifeless body to Tirana. In the family home, surrounded by furniture that looks like silent ghosts, Melsi begins to rummage through childhood memories. Suddenly, among them he finds a notebook of notes, which leads him to a shocking discovery about his father and his family.

Through characters who carry painful secrets within them and the tragedies of the twentieth century, Kapllani reconstructs the story of a family that hides its origin. He recounts the stories of a father and son who survived cruel regimes and a turbulent era thanks to their passion and love for books and languages.
