"I write because people have no patience to listen to my thoughts to the end; everyone wants to talk themselves: blah, blah, blah!… Like yellow-beaked chicks with open beaks. If they listened to me when I talk in a café, on the street or anywhere else, I would not write at all. I want to get the pain out. Because pain is worse than the sea: you can drown in it even while sitting on the shore. Paper is more patient: I torture it, I violate it, and it never complains. I never find out whether it likes what I say to it or not. It is not like those canaries in motels that only chirp and want barley grains from morning till night. It is a wonderful mute woman. Pour on her as much as you like, sow the seeds of letters on her, she only blossoms and multiplies. Try doing this with a woman!"
