At the center of the tragedy "King Oedipus" is the protagonist, Oedipus, who tries by any means to understand who he is, where he comes from, what he has done knowingly and unknowingly, what consequences it has brought to the community, and tries somehow to establish justice among people, peace between people and the gods, ready even to sacrifice himself. After learning that he himself is the cause of the misfortunes that have befallen the city, Oedipus punishes himself by blinding and sets off as a wanderer. Thus he cleanses the city not only by finding the cause of the plague, but also physically, by voluntarily leaving it. Although unfortunate, Oedipus is the image of a dignified ruler, a governor devoted to the welfare of his subjects. At the beginning of the tragedy, Oedipus appears as a victim of fate, while at the end, although stripped of all the attributes and privileges of royal power, he remains a person who thinks and acts with free will.
