The Seventh Day

"The Seventh Day" – a journey through the hell of modern times, guided by Yang Fei, the novel's protagonist, who suddenly dies at the age of forty. Having no plot of land for a grave, he is forced to wander endlessly through the afterlife without any purpose. Over the seven-day time span (the time it took God to create the world), our hero meets the spirits of people he lost in life and realises that the afterlife encompasses all the misfortunes of the modern era: organ traffickers, young people who took their own lives, the wrongly condemned, and so on.

As Yang Fei returns to the key moments of his life, we get to know extraordinary characters: his adoptive father, his former wife who took her own life, neighbours who died under the rubble of the houses that were demolished on them, and many other characters. The protagonist's journey charts the map of this great nation: its absurdities, its pains and its soul.
