Albert Camus established himself with his first works as one of the most powerful pens of the 20th century. He was only 27 when he left Algeria for France, after the newspaper he edited in Algiers was shut down by pro-fascist censorship. A friend had promised him a typesetting job at a Parisian newspaper, and this is how his "career" in France began, in March 1940. Two years later, the major Parisian publishing house Gallimard released almost simultaneously, in June and October 1942 respectively, the short novel The Stranger and the long essay The Myth of Sisyphus. The history of French literature had turned a page.
