Abel Sánchez: a story of passion

"Abel Sánchez" is one of the most poignant works by Miguel de Unamuno, which can be read as a story of passion or as the story of a passion. It represents an engagement in a new narrative mode within Unamuno's romantic career: that of the narrator. This theme, which belongs to the heritage of culture and has been treated by literature in all genres, receives a double treatment in this work, as it can be read as another version of the story of Cain and Abel – a story of passion – or as an analysis of a character's inner world – the story of a passion. Beyond this, Unamuno attempts to penetrate what, on the surface, is a historical vice of envy and cynicism among Spaniards.
